Redemption of markka notes, annulled on 1.1.1994

At the beginning of 1994, the Bank of Finland withdrew old banknotes, which lost their legal tender status. Until then, banknotes issued in 1945, or later, had been legal tender.

The Bank of Finland has harmonised the redemption periods for markka banknotes so that both old-type markka notes annulled at the beginning of 1994 and newer markka notes annulled upon euro cash changeover will be redeemed at their face value by the Bank of Finland until 29 February 2012. Thus, the redemption applies to all types of banknotes issued from 1945 onwards.

Banknotes issued prior to 1963 will be redeemed at one hundredth of their face value. The denominations of banknotes issued prior to the 1963 monetary reform are indicated at their old markka values in the table; their post-reform markka value (ie in terms of markka value in 1963–2002) was one hundredth of their value indicated on the notes.


Markka banknotes are redeemed by:

  • Bank of Finland, Customer Service Office, Helsinki
  • Commercial banks (Nordea and Sampo), co-operative banks, independent local co-operative banks and savings banks
  • Forex Oy
