Euro cash changeover in 2001–2002

Finland changed over to using euro banknotes and coins on 1 January 2002. Upon termination of the changeover period, markka banknotes and coins ceased to be legal tender as from 28 February 2002.

As we continue to receive questions on the details and timetables of the changeover, we shall keep these historical data available on our service sites for the present.

In 2001 a number of brochures on euro banknotes and coins were published. The Bank of Finland's euro guide continues to be available for subscription in Finnish and Swedish from our supplies. It includes information on the main security features of euro banknotes and the national sides of euro coins. (Only the 12 euro area countries' data for 2001 is included, with the exclusion of data on Slovenia, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City). The Bank's euro guide and brochure on euro banknotes and coins in PDF format are available in Finnish and Swedish, as well.
